Long awaited update

Things have been crazy. Christmas was great, especially for Jonathan, he is still enjoying all his toys. He loves his drum set, we are thankful that the word "soft" is in his vocabulary base, though it only seems to work for a few seconds before he is at full volume again. He enjoys chatting with his new Elmo, and even gives him hugs. He has a new slide that he is pretty brave on as well.

We had a great morning, the rain had cleared so we decided to go to Disneyland for a little bit, as we were getting ready to leave it starting pouring rain! I guess it hadn't cleared after all! Thankfully we had brought the rain cover for Jonathan's stroller, Edith had a nice hooded winter jacket, I however had a somewhat thin fabric jacket on and got totally soaked.

Friday we hosted our young adult dinner at the corps, we had about 30 people there, it was a bit more work than I had anticipated but well worth it. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and as far as potlucks go it was very tasty! I made a carmel apple cheesecake...may have been my best ever! I also made a chocolate mouse cheesecake, didn't try it, but had good comments.

I am still trying to make time to get some videos posted, sorry for the delay.

Just kickin' it OLD SCHOOL

It is Christmas Eve, and we are just finishing off a long day. Jonathan was in a very playful mood tonight which was cool. He wanted to walk back and forth between Edith and me, occasionaly ducking around Chiquita as she ran through his path.

I am sure to have lots of video and pictures of tomorrow, as this will be the first Christmas that Jonathan will really be a big part of. Although he was spoiled last year, this year I think he will obviously have an appreciation for everything, especially ripping up the paper and playing with all the boxes that the toys came in!

Merry Christmas

Chilly California

Please keep Jonathan in your prayers he is 14 months and has his first real cold. It has been chilly, but along with that people everywhere are getting colds, figured it was only a matter of time before he got one himself.

Although he has sniffles, a cough, and a fever he is still active, just fussy.

Well Jonathan, Edith and I have been very busy with Christmas activities. We have been out looking at Christmas lights with young adults from the church, we went to the christmas play, done by Santa Ana but at LA Central this past Sunday, next Sunday is at our corps, and Tuesday we are going to see the Glory of Christmas. Somehwhere between all that we have been shopping and trying to get presents out in the mail....hope to get that done in the next 2 days or else I will be in trouble!

Jonathan is really starting to like other types of food outside of the gerber world, fruits, bread, pasta, even a chicken nugget, have all benn munched on by him, which is great considering a month ago he would just spit it back out.

He continues to grow and impress his mommy and daddy each day.

This is a photo taken at church of JD walking, shortly after this he was in the church and did a nose dive on the carpet, so if you see upcoming pictures of him with a mark on his nose....that's what happened.

jd eating spaghetti

First off you can see that Jonathan got a haircut. His mom did a great job trimming all his hair, doing her best to avoid giving him the bowl style look. Something that I know a lot of from my childhood photos!

Jonathan has reached the age where it seems he accomplishes something new everyday.

He can walk...well who knows how far, but all the way across the lawn I know that. Seems like he could just keep going and going if he wants to. Still getting his balance and footwork down, he seems to like dragging his feet every now and then. Reminds me of my dad always telling me "Pick up your feet boy!", ahh good times.

Big news in this picture, and I would have never thought that this would be BIG news, but it is. Jonathan decided to join us for dinner last night and eat some spaghetti noodles AND nibble on a bread stick. It was a great moment because he hasn't really enjoyed eating anything solid, in fact he has the habit of hurling after putting anything in his mouth that isn't gerber mush! So this was a cool and exciting night for two proud parents.

Turkey Day 2 - Revenge of the baby

We had a nice Thanksgiving, Jonathan obviously is a "little" bigger this year. He didn't have any Turkey but did have a small bite of pumpkin pie.

Edith and family are off looking for sales, I bought Transformers on BluRay online for $10, I'm done for the day, going back to bed.

Christmas here we come!

here comes the parade

Jonathan really loves the parades at Disneyland. He gets so excited to see all the characters moving around, he claps to the music and even waves on occasion. Funny thing is he gets really shy when we actually go to take a picture with a character, still getting used to it I'm sure.

Things here have been crazy, I preached at my first ever regular worship service this past Sunday night. I've done it before with teens and young adults but not with adults. I was nervous and a bit jittery but got through okay. It was a blessing and a cool opportunity, not something I think I would want to have to do every week though...so don't be getting any ideas out there!

We are looking forward to Thanksgiving, A couple more holiday events but the big ones are out of the way, so I may finally have a chance to be updating more often again.

Excited that in less than 2 months we are going back to Disney World!

Originally uploaded by dougjsimpson79@yahoo.com
It is that busy time of the year for me, so I am afraid that the postings are not getting up as fast as I would like. But here is a list of some of the latest happenings for Jonathan and the family.

Jonathan is eating mostly out of the bottle now, and is even taking it upon himself to hold the bottle and eat at his own pace. He is pretty good about not tossing it around and we have been impressed with how well he does.

We are getting very close to having a full on walking baby. He walks pretty well now when you hold both his hands, and although he is a little more wobbly he will also walk for awhile at your side when holding just one hand.

We just got back from Men's camp, it wasn't to intense for me so got a little family time in.

Chiquita has an eye ulcer in her left eye, something that pugs are more likely to get than some other breeds because of the way their eyes are. So now she has to get a few rounds of eye drops each day and some other medicine. They said it looks like it was caught in time and things should be okay.

picking out ornaments

Edith and I have a tradition, the first year we got married we bought our Christmas tree the first Saturday of November. Ever since we have done our best to start decorating around that time each year. Last year was obviously difficult, Jonathan was just a month old, Edith was still recovering, and I was learning how to be a daddy. This year we are making up for it.

We started decorating this past weekend, the tree is up with all the ornaments, my Simpsons Christmas Train, 16 pieces as of now, is on display along with other nice Christmas items we have collected over the years, Jonathan even has a couple Sesame Street stockings hanging around the house. Still to come are the outside lights, but those can wait till Thanksgiving time.

Jonathan had lots of fun with the plastic ball ornaments, kid friendly! He did his best to put them on the tree, he would put his hand out and act like he was going to put it on, then quickly snatch it back, not to sure about this tree thing..

These shoes were made for walking

Jonathan got some new shoes, some cool Nike's. We didn't get them because they were nike, but because they were good shoes and really seemed to fit well and had great flexibility. So Jonathan, who hasn't ever like much of anything on his feet didn't want to take them off today. In fact when his Grandma Ortiz had taken them to put them away he started to cry.

He wore out Edith today...he was so on the go, I have the feeling that this is the end of rest for Mommy and Daddy.

napping at church

Not a lot of updates lately, sorry. We had a big youth event at the corps this past Saturday night that I was heading up, had a good crowd, a few other corps joined us.

This is a rare photo...jonathan napping during the day! :) He is definetly changing, his nap schedule has become infrequent, as has his eating schedule. We have been trying to get him on some solids but it is a slow process. He either doesn't take it from us or chucks it back up after he has it, along with whatever else he just ate.

Any suggestions from all the mom's out there on how to ease him onto some more solid foods other than gerber #2's? Right now that is all he will take, he isn't even eating his baby cookies. :(

Jonathan usually gets to watch an episode of Sesame Street each day, often it is just on in the background as he plays with his toys. It seems he has figured out between the show and playing with his toys who is who.

One Year Doctor Visit

Go horsie Go
Originally uploaded by dougjsimpson79@yahoo.com
Yesterday we went to the doctor, Jonathan got his shots, which he wasn't to happy about of course. But he quickly got over it and seems to be doing very well. He weighed in just over 25 lbs, which is about what he was a couple months ago. He is 31 inches, so he continues to grow but seems to be replacing fat with muscle, he is a good sized 18 month old baby according to the doctor.

There was some concern that his head was to big as it was sort of off the charts, compared to the rest of him, but we are back on the charts now so that was good to hear....but still......a big head to balance.

Sad news regarding Autotopia, we went back on the 4th to ride and discovered on October 1st the changed the ride requirements from you must be at least 1 to ride, to a height limit, Jonathan is just a few inches shy of it, so sadly we did not go on. We were pretty bummed that we decided to wait till Jonathan was one, to make it special, even though we could have obviously lied, and then have it changed to a height limit. The guy at the front of the line said they were caught off guard, they showed up that monday and they had added the height requirement and raised the one for ride alone drivers.

Birthday Pinata Fun

As you all know, Jonathan celebrated his 1st birthday on Thursday. It was a great day...although a little tiring especially for his mom and dad. We woke up and went to Disneyland for a little bit, got a birthday button for Jonathan, went to the petting zoo, Jonathan ate, Edith and I enjoyed a parfait and cinnamon roll, it was a good time. So much that time got away from us and we didn't get on a ride...which was one of the main ideas of going, Autotopia will just have to wait till next time.

We came back and started getting everything ready for the party. enchilada's and carne asada were on the menu. I even tried out making some chili sauce, it got good reviews in taste but wasn't very spicy, but not bad for my first try.

Jonathan had a fun time hitting his pinata with a soft bat, it actually was suppose to be a pinata that you pick a string and pull, and then the next person picks a string, and so on till the right string is picked.....yeah Edith helped Jonathan pick a string and it just happened to be the right one. So candy for everyone!

Thank you to all those who came, sent cards and gifts, and most importantly have kept us in your prayers.

I hope to have a video uploaded sometime today, I used my new camera to capture the day and then roughly through it all together.

In 6 days and about 21 hours Jonathan will turn 1! Wow, where has the year gone. I look back at all these pictures, and I read some of the posts along the way and struggle to comprehend how it all went by so fast. Jonathan has been such an awesome little baby, and now....he will become a super awesome little boy.

I heard about this thing called the "terrible two's", but nobody ever warned me about the "splashy one's"!

Jonathan the Explorer

Jonathan is so curious, he loves to crawl and explore like all babies I am sure. He will pull himself up high, and he will lay flat on his belly, whatever it takes to get to or see what interests him.

two best friends

We occasionaly have sesame street on in the room or out in the living room as Jonathan plays in his crib, crawls around, or rests in our arms. It seems he is starting to recognize the characters as the ones he shares a crib with. There are these dvd's "sesame beginings", for babies and kids, we have a couple and pop them in, lots of music and moving, Jonathan likes to shake his booty to them!

Speaking of lucky....."my" Broncos got very lucky this past Sunday, some very poor referee work handed the Broncos a couple extra chances in the game and we were able to defeat the San Diego Chargers. I feel a little bad about it.....but a win is a win.

Happy Birthday Daddy!

Today was my Birthday. Edith put on a great Broncos vs. Raiders party for me. We had the TV room all decked out in orange and blue. She even made custom signs with her CriCut scrapbook lettering machine!

The Broncos kicked some Raider booty, which made the night even better! A lot of people came over, which was weird for me since I am not used to big birthday parties, never exactly rolled with a bunch of friends growing up so it was mostly a couple friends and family each year. So with a bunch of the young adults from church coming over it really was a party. I even let the Raider fans in.....they left much more quietly than they came though.

The funniest moment of the night was when we realized we didn't have any candles for the cake. Edith..thinking swiftly...grabbed a baby elmo candle that was part of a pack that we bought for Jonathan's cake next month. So for my 29th birthday I made a wish while blowing out a flame on top of baby elmo's head.

Thanks to all that came and all that sent cards and made phone calls.

Tub Time Talking

Things have gotten back to normal pretty fast. Yesterday, late afternoon we dropped of my mom at the airport. She had been here for 2 weeks and we enjoyed every moment we could get with her, and I know she enjoyed the time she had with us....especially Jonathan.

We had a calm evening at home Thursday night, and then Friday night Young Adult class this evening. This Sunday I have to work, the Welcoming of the new DC, but then I get Monday off...which is nice because it is my birthday and Broncos vs Raiders monday night football. So expect lots of pictures of Jonathan and his daddy in their bronco gear!!!!!!

Grandma and me take a dip

I noticed how few photos I have uploaded, and how few posts have gone up this month. It was a crazy month with a couple events including Latino Family Camp this past weekend.

All went well at camp but between the normal A/V stuff and helping lead the teen classes Saturday and Sunday morning we never got much "family" time.

My mom is in town for a few days, staying with my Aunt. She is actually helping my Aunt around the house as she recently had some surgery. We decided to visit the pool on Monday, Jonathan did great.

Of course he was a bit nervous at first, but his mommy got him used to the water and before you knew what happened he was splashing around and having a good time.

Haven't update the site, sorry. But wanted to show you all that Jonathan really has the crawling thing down now. So much so that he doesn't like to be in his walker or be walked around by his mommy or daddy anymore. He prefers to crawl everywhere, easier and faster for him I guess.

Jonathan and Thomas

This is our next door neighbors baby, he is a week younger than Jonathan. He is a big little guy but yet next to Jonathan still looks small. They had a fun time going up and down the driveway in the little wagon. Thomas and Jonathan share the same love for empty water bottles, so when Jonathan took the bottle from Thomas I was thankful Thomas didn't have a fit. Then Jonathan decided to whack Thomas in the head with the bottle...doh! He had a "i'm about to cry" look on his face but his mom quickly picked him up and reasuured him he was fine.

We went and saw the latest Batman movie at the IMAX theater today, it was very good, especially blown up big on the IMAX screen. Most o the movie is just taking advantage of the large screen but some of it was actually shot in the IMAX format and uses the WHOLE screen and looks very cool. This was only the second movie we have seen in theaters since Jonathan was born, it is stil weird going out and doing things without him.

Me and PaPa Bear

Yes that is me inside a bear costume...before I explain let me say this. I am sad some days to check the blog and see no comments have been posted, I know there are at least a dozen people out there who read the blog so if you don't make a comment on this photo, I am sure you never will comment on the blog.

While up at camp we shot a video for the upcoming Latino Family camp where I am leading the teenager ministry on Saturday. When the video is completed I will be posting it on the blog. Until then lets just say that a bear goes on a blind date and hilarity comes along for the ride!

Don't mess with me I had a long night

Jonathan hasn't slept at camp since he was 1 month old, so 9 months later he is a little more aware that where he is sleeping is not home. So he had a couple long nights, waking up in the middle of the night and saying "This isn't my crib, and this isn't my room, where is my Mommy?" So he ended up sleeping the VERY EARLY morning hours between me and Edith both days.

Which was not too much fun for either of us, especially Edith. Between my snoring and Jonathan rolling around and smacking her in the face...just to make sure she was still there, it was a couple long nights.

Look what I got..cookie monster piano

Jonathan is now 10 months old. Wow, the time keeps flying by, it is hard to believe we are only two months away from him being a year old.

We went up to the Camarillo Outlet Stores on Saturday, found a great birthday present for Jonathan. It is a little 4 key piano....that is a cookie monster! Perfecto!!!

We spent Saturday night through Monday morning at camp, I am working on a couple videos for the Army so we made a family weekend adventure out of it.

It was a rolling earthquake that seemed to last for awhile, not as much scary as just a weird feeling. This was actually the first real earthquake I have felt since moving to SoCal in 1994.

Edith was at work in the basement of the hospital, they felt it shaking as well. They made there way out of the building for a little bit just as a precaution.

Jonathan was sleeping, but no he did not sleep through it. Abuelita Ortiz was right outside the room window in the backyard feeding Bella, David and Elizabeth were both home as well. As soon as the shaking started they all made a path for Jonathan. He was crying, a little scared and confused about what was going on. He seems fine now, he is in his little jumper playing a baby guitar, more like teething on the guitar as it makes noises but still.

Happy Birthday Edith

We had a nice day today, didn't do any big parties but had some fun. We went out to breakfast with Edith's mom and sister, then in the afternoon we were off to Disneyland.

We waited at City Hall, 15 minutes or so, so Edith could get a Happy Birthday button and we get up there and the lady gives us a stinkin' sticker! Well when walking in one of the stores a lady asked Edith if she would like a button instead, so we were happy about that.

We had dinner at the Blue Bayou, it was really good, although Jonathan didn't want to enjoy the atmospher. He was fussy and needed to nap, I got him to sleep before the food arrived but every time I tried putting him down in his stroller he woke back up crying so I ended up holding him for most of the dinner. Wasn't too big of a deal, turns out I am pretty good eating with one hand, made me slow down and enjoy the meal, that is for sure.

We finished off the eveing back at the house with Edith's family. Had a custom cake from Coldstone Creamery, Edith's favorite, a mix of bannana ice cream with brownies, chocolate, good stuff if you like chocolate...I ate the icecream part! :)

This is Jonathan in his new PJ's. It is actually very dark in the room but I set the camera with no flash and a really long exposure so you could see his cool pajamas.
